Deadline for free well registration is March 31
The Salinas Valley Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency partnered with Monterey County Water Resources Agency to launch a new well registration program, aiming to increase knowledge about smaller wells in the Salinas Valley. All wells in the Salinas Valley must be registered.
The State of California’s Sustainable Groundwater Management Act requires groundwater basins across the state to be monitored to ensure long-term sustainability for all uses and users of groundwater. Accurate information about wells helps local agencies better understand groundwater conditions and manage resources effectively. Information about residential wells — such as location and depth — is particularly important because residential wells are typically more shallow than agricultural or municipal wells, making them more vulnerable during periods of declining groundwater levels. Well registration supports more accurate planning that helps guide sustainable groundwater management decisions. All well owners are required to register.
Well registration can be completed online or by filling out a paper copy found online and submitting it by email to WellRegistration@countyofmonterey.gov or mailing it to MCWRA, PO Box 930, Salinas, CA 93902.
For residents who have questions and want assistance filling out registration forms, there are well registration workshops:
- In-Person Workshop: Hosted by District 2 Supervisor Glenn Church in partnership with MCWRA and SVBGSA from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Prunedale Grange (17890 Moro Road in Salinas)
- Digital Workshop: Hosted by District 2 Supervisor Glenn Church and District 5 Supervisor Kate Daniels in partnership with MCWRA and SVBGSA from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Zoom
